The Jew traditional house is one of the traditional houses belonging to the Asmat tribe who inhabit the island of Papua. Located in Agats District, Asmat Regency, the Jew traditional house is full of meaning and uniqueness that cannot be found in other areas. For the size of the traditional house of the Asmat tribe itself, generally the area reaches 10-15 meters and there is also a length that reaches 50 meters with a width of dozens of meters.



Jew is the name of the traditional house of the Asmat tribe in Papua, it turns out that this traditional house also has other names such as Je, Jeu and Yeu. According to the Asmat language, the word Jew itself means spirit or soul. Thus, Jew can be interpreted as an atma (spirit) which arouses a sense of desire in humans to unite with each other in social life.


There are several conditions in the construction of the Asmat Jew's traditional house:

> Wear wooden fabric which must be built facing the way

   river direction.

> The general building area of ​​the house is 10 × 15 m.

> Using a support pole made of iron wood,

   then carved according to the characteristics of the Asmat Tribe itself.

> Using a roof made of woven sago leaves or

   can also use nipah leaf material.

> Construction using rattan rope or it can also use roots

   plants, and nails are not allowed.


The traditional house of the Asmat tribe is considered sacred by its residents, so this house is also made sacred to them. The function of this house is also very special for the Asmat community structure itself. The background of the construction of this house is to carry out special traditional activities or events.
