Banten is the youngest city in Indonesia, the formation of Banten itself in the 2000s. Although it is known as the youngest city in Indonesia, people have long known Banten as an area that has a unique culture. One of the unique and extreme cultures of offering is Debus martial art.


Debus is a martial art performance known as one of the performing arts of Banten people in the west of Java Island. Debus itself is a typical Banten supernatural power show that relies on immunity to sharp weapons and the heat of fire. This traditional art has been practiced since the 16th century, to be precise during the reign of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin (1532–1570).


At first, Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin used Debus as a means of spreading Islam in Banten. During the time of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (1651–1692), this game was a means to pump up the fighting spirit of the people of Banten against the VOC. At this time, the Debus game itself is one of the performing arts which is held for cultural events or traditional ceremonies.


Debus is a traditional martial art that is imbued with supernatural powers. This attraction also requires a combination of inner strength, martial arts, and the ability to bring traditional dance. Debus perpetrators are often referred to as jawara.
