Dutch troops trying to exert influence in this area are noted to have experienced some resistance from the Akits. The Akit people survive from hunting, fishing and processing sago, which grows wild on Rupat Island. In addition, they also hunt wild boar, deer or mouse deer using spear chopsticks, arrows and sometimes using traps.
