Saman dance is a dance performance of the Gayo tribe (Gayo Lues) which is usually performed to celebrate important events in adat. In addition to celebrating events in the traditional saman dance, it is also usually used to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Saman dance is an art originating from Indonesia, the figure of the founder and disseminator of the saman dance is Syekh Saman who comes from Gayo, Southeast Aceh. The meaning of the Saman Dance itself is a medium for the achievement of messages (da'wah). This dance reflects education, religion, manners, heroism, cohesiveness and togetherness.
For the saman dance movement itself uses two elements of motion. And this is a fundamental element in the saman dance. The first motion is clapping, and the second is chest clapping. This has led to the presumption that the sheikh Saman when spreading Islam studied Old Malay dances and then brought them back through movements accompanied by Islamic da'wah poetry.
In arranging a compactness in the dance, usually the dancers are led by two sheikhs. The sheikh leaf itself is someone who regulates the rhythm of the movements as well as becomes a guide for the songs that accompany this dance.
In the beginning, this saman dance was only played by men. However, the number itself is not more than 10 people, where 8 people become dancers and 2 people give cues. After time, the saman dance itself can be played by more than 10 dancers, if in the past the saman dance could only be played by a man, now the saman dance can be played by women.
hopefully so many articles about the saman dance can be useful and add insight and knowledge about Indonesian culture.
